Family friendly garden

Before

The garden had a dominant palm tree which the clients didn’t really like and it didn't fit with the rest of the garden, which had smaller, more traditional planting.
The client brief required a child-friendly space; to encourage wildlife and have space to relax and entertain.

The clients were keen to get involved and wanted to look after their garden, once it had been completed but they needed reassurance and guidance to make it manageable as well as pretty. As busy working parents the ongoing maintenance had to be fairly light..
After

Removing the large palm tree and laying a curving lawn helped the rest of the garden work together. An extra patio in the corner, catches more of the sun and gives a location for a new sofa and firepit, slightly enclosed and framed by the modern, semi-pergola.
An archway leads to the children’s play area and is dual purpose as a swing can be attached or removed, as required.
The original patio is now a spacious dining area framed by planting and in easy reach of the barbecue and small greenhouse.
Painting most of the fences black helps them to recede and brings the planting into focus.

The existing planting was developed with more shrubs and perennials to extend the season of interest. This also helps the wildlife garden as it creates more foraging and food available to supplement the bird boxes, table and feeders.
