Lawn expanse to filled borders

It wasn’t really overlooked, but had a lot of trees and greenery from neighbouring gardens (and leaves!) as well as mis-matched fencing. The client wanted ‘colour’ and flowers to liven up the space.

This garden had very little planting apart from a very large expanse of grass, a few evergreens around the edge of the lawn, the occasional dying shrub and a lot of Hypericum which had taken over most of a flower border. A compost bin was an unwelcome focal point.

The large lawn was reduced by big curving beds on each side.

Instead of being a direct focus from the kitchen window, the compost bin was re-sited and a leaf-mould bay was also constructed.

To unify the mixed fencing, it was all painted the same colour. Hard-landscaping was tidied up but essentially remained the same to reduce costs.

Three small trees were added which will develop over time and help to limit the overpowering feeling from the surrounding areas. New bulbs, perennials and shrubs give year-round interest in colour, texture and form.

There is far more wildlife in the garden and a bird table and feeders are visited regularly.
