Zigzag town garden

Before

The client wanted a zigzag design that would make use of all of the space, with interesting views from each of the house windows, rather than looking onto fencing.

A garden office with shed storage and a swing needed to be incorporated and everything needed to connect with the existing front garden.
The garden was mainly laid to lawn and tiled paving, with mature shrubs and a dominant shed. The side return was under-used and pebbled throughout.

Zigzag paths offer alternative routes throughout the garden with consistent materials creating a unified space.

The angles used help the garden to feel wider and makes the under-used side return part of the main garden.

Planting beds and borders break up the space and provide year-round interest with a range of trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs.

The garden office is much bigger than the original shed and stretches along the back boundary. However, it feels less intrusive due to its position and colour, connecting it to the themes in the rest of the garden.

As the planting develops, the clean lines soften and further disguise the boundaries.

Adding lighting helps to make the garden practical as the evenings draw in.
